About Placentia
The name of the city of Placentia comes from a latin word meaning “a pleasant place to live” which is now the city’s motto and can be seen on license plate frames on resident’s cars all over town. The city was named by Sarah Ann McFadden, wife of William McFadden, who purchased the land in 1868. In 1910 A.S. Bradford convinced the railways to re-route a railroad through the town of Placentia, putting the town on the map for commerce and trade, mainly citrus, walnuts, avocados and grapes. The historic Bradford house still stands in the middle part of town, and Bradford Avenue is a major street in the town, as the streets themselves were laid out my Mr. Bradford himself. In 1926 the town had 500 residents, by 1960 it swelled to 5,000 and currently the town is home to 45,000 people. The famed railroad that runs through the city became a source of conflict for many, as the trains were no longer used as a vehicle for commerce for the city, but just barreling through town on to the Midwest from LA and Long Beach. The trains caused many traffic issues, and in the 1990’s a plan was devised to sink the train tracks under the streets, based on the success of the Alameda Corridor Project in LA, but due to mismanagement of funds and the pulling of federal funds, the plan nearly bankrupt the city. By 2005 the plans were changed completely, including adding overpasses at major intersections to ease traffic problems.
